Academy 1:35 Scale AH-1W Super Cobra with NTS Update

Kit Purchased From: Model Zone
Kit Price: £18.99
Extras: Eduard 1:35 ED32090 Bell AH-1W Super Cobra interior from Hannants £13.99

The AH-1W Super Cobra comprises the backbone of the United States Marine Corps' attack helicopter fleet. Its latest variant, the NTS (Night Targeting System) Super Cobra has received a suite of sensor, targeting and defensive system upgrades. This important new system detects and laser designates tactical targets under daytime, night-time or adverse conditions. The Super Cobra can carry both TOW and Hellfire missiles. The Raytheon BGM-71 TOW missile has a range of more than 3km and semi-automatic line of sight guidance. The AGM-114 Hellfire missile is equipped with a semi-active laser seeker and has a range of 7km.
The Super Cobra has fire and forget capabilities when firing the Hellfire Missiles in co-operative mode with laser target illumination. Because the NTS nose mounted equipment is larger, a re-worked nose and canopy shape was necessary making identification easier. Also known as the "Whisky" Cobra, the AH-1W was the first attack helicopter to qualify for both the Sidewinder air-to-air missile and the sidearm anti-radiation missile. Both missiles can use the same LAU-7 rail launcher. Sidearm has a range of more than 15km. AIM-9L Sidewinder is an all-aspect short range air-to-air missile produced by Lockheed Martin and Raytheon having a range of 15km. It can also fire a range of air-to-ground rockets, for example 70mm rockets armed with sub munition warheads or the larger 12.7cm Zuni rocket bombs. The "Whisky" carries a three-barrel 20mm Gatling gun for close range (up to 2km) engagement and 750 rounds of ammunition. With the gun in a fixed forward position, the pilot can aim by manoeuvring the helicopter. Either crew member can slave the turret to the helmet-mounted sight and aim the gun just by looking at the target.

Not too happy with the etched brass control panels, there seems to be more detail in the plastic part.

The finished results were good, although I didn't do them justice with my dodgy hands, that and the fact I spent a few hours looking for the pieces that whizzed off the table and onto the floor Smile

I kind of over did the sanding on the seatbelts thus removing some of the detail, so to put things right I decided to add some Elastoplast tape to replicate the seat fabric.

I recently tried Vallejo Plastic Putty to fill the seams and to be honest it did the job brilliantly, although it does take longer than the squadron putty to dry.

I hit a snag when I came to checking out the rotor blades, one of the main blades has a crack going right through the piece right in the middle!  I should have checked all the parts before I started building, I will try and glue the piece back together while I get in contact with Academy and see if they can send me a replacement?

I definitely think I am getting slower with age, but I have done managed to get more done on the bird, I have plugged the firewalls as seen on the real thing and did a little scratch building of the lower engine cover.

Just started on the weathering stage, made up a mix of black and brown oil paints with some odourless thinners and filled all the panel lines etc, the pictures don't really show my efforts but they are there somewhere  Very Happy
